Shiromi District, Saito City, Miyazaki Prefecture Formerly known as Higashi Mera District

The village where we live is located about an hour’s drive from Saito city’s center, deep in the mountains of the Kyushu mountain range.

Blessed with rich greenery and clear water, it is a quiet mountain village where people live in harmony with natural flora and fauna.

About 50 years ago, the village began cultivating yuzu, which originally grew wild in the former Higashi Mera district, as a specialty.

Today, it is one of the leading production areas in Kyushu.

The area is also known for its traditional culture, such as Shiromi Kagura (a traditional Shinto dance). Shiromi Kagura is a nationally designated important cultural property and its history has been handed down since the Jomon period (14500 BCE- 300 BCE).

It is also a place where elementary and junior high school students spend a year away from their parents and gain a variety of natural experiences. We are also working on a mountain village study abroad program.
